On September 8, 2024, the local government of Marikina commemorated the 37th Marikina Police Memorial Day at the Marikina Police Memorial Monument in Loyola Memorial Park, Tañong, Marikina City. The event, an annual tradition, honors the brave members of the Marikina Police Force who made the ultimate sacrifice in their service to the community.

In his welcome message, Marikina City Vice Mayor Marion S. Andres, representing Mayor Marcelino Teodoro, paid tribute to the fallen members of the Marikina Police Force. In his message, Vice Mayor Andres underscored the importance of remembering the sacrifices of the fallen as a source of education and inspiration for future generations.

Representing Eastern Police District Director PBGen Wilson Asueta, Deputy Director for Administration PCol Josefino D. Ligan, expressed his deep respect for the sacrifices made by the police force and emphasized that the event commemorates not just their deaths but their lives as well.

This year, the guest of honor was Executive Director Donald James D. Gawe, CESO III, of the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA). In his address, ED Gawe emphasized the profound significance of remembering the fallen heroes, whose dedication and selfless service continue to inspire the community. “Ang kanilang buhay na inialay para sa bayan ay nagbibigay sa atin ng malalim na pag-unawa sa tunay na kahulugan ng paglilingkod,” he stated, reminding those in attendance of the deep sense of purpose that these officers exemplified.

Beyond paying tribute to the past, ED Gawe also acknowledged the current members of the Marikina Police Force for their unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the city. He commended their daily efforts, highlighting that their courage and dedication to duty do not go unnoticed. “You are the guardians of peace,” he declared, affirming their vital role in keeping homes, streets, and neighborhoods safe.

One of the key points of ED Gawe’s message was the call for police officers to embrace volunteerism as part of their service. He encouraged them to go beyond their official duties and become role models for empathy and community service. “By showing a willingness to help those in need, you can inspire others and strengthen the fabric of the community,” ED Gawe remarked, urging the officers to take on roles that extend beyond their professional responsibilities.

In closing, ED Gawe emphasized the importance of leaving a lasting legacy built on hope, compassion, and resilience. His message called on all members of the community to lead with kindness and volunteerism, creating a ripple effect that could unite and uplift the city.

The annual event is organized by the Civic Action Team of Marikina, Inc., through its Skipper and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dr. Jahnwil R. Alejaga.

The event was attended by families of the fallen officers, Marikina Councilors from Districts 1 and 2, department heads, members of the Marikina Police Force, representatives from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), criminology students from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina (PLMar), and various volunteers. The presence of these groups underscored the unity and collective respect for the sacrifices made by the brave officers and the ongoing dedication of those who continue to serve.

As the city of Marikina commemorates its fallen heroes, the message of the day was clear: the legacy of service, compassion, and resilience lives on in the hearts of those who serve and in the community they protect.
