15 January 2020 PNVSCA and University of Baguio Encourage NSTP Students to Volunteer

The University of Baguio (UB), in collaboration with the Philippine National Volunteer Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA), held a Seminar-Forum on Volunteerism for more than 2,000 UB National Service Training Program (NSTP) students last 11 January 2020.

PNVSCA Officer-in Charge Corazon M. Macaraig provided a brief orientation on the basic concepts of volunteerism and the role of each sector in volunteerism for volunteerism for nation-building and inclusive growth.

Urging the students to use their past rejection as a motivation to volunteer, Mr. Mark Conrad Ravanzo shared how his longing for his father served as a driving force to establish I am Making a Difference (I am M.A.D). His organization mobilizes volunteers to join camps in far-flung communities nationwide and teach children Filipino values and inspire them to become future leaders. He also shared some of the challenges and success stories of his volunteer work in I am MAD. Mr. Ravanzo is a 2013 national awardee of the SOV.

Mr. Edward Era, Founding President of the Samahang Kabataang Boluntaryo ng Pilipinas (SKBP), also encouraged he participants to volunteer to express their patriotism. "Ang pagiging volunteer ay nagsisimula sa pagmamahal sa bayan" (Volunteering starts with loving one’s country). He also shared his volunteering activities as a former overseas Filipino worker for five years and founder of Munting Hiling Foundation.

Dr. Janice Kaylyn K. Lonogan, UB Vice President for Academic Affairs, encouraged the students to share and apply what they learned inside the classroom and be advocates of volunteerism in the community.
The event was spearheaded by Dr. Romer D. Tanyag and coordinated by Mr. Ireneo Matic III of the UB Extension and Community Outreach Services. The seminar is one of the ways in which the PNVSCA promotes volunteerism in the academe.
