01 February 2019 PNVSCA and DILG-NCR Holds Appreciation Ceremony for Volunteers

Last 25 January 2019, the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA) and the National Capital Region Search Committee (NCR-RSC) conferred Certificates of Appreciation to the Search for Outstanding Volunteers (SOV) 2018 nominees from the NCR.

Three individuals and one organization rendering assistance in the fields of disaster risk reduction and management, health, and social services were commended in the appreciation ceremony held at the PNVSCA Office.

Realizing the significance of psychosocial support to terminally-ill patients, Ms. Christine Reyes has devoted fifteen years providing motherly love to cancer-stricken kids in the partner hospitals of Kythe Foundation, Inc.. Kythe Foundation is a non-profit organization which engages volunteers in programs aiming to improve the quality of life of chronically-ill children. Ms. Reyes has also extended her volunteer services to her church ministry and organized projects and lectures on functional medicine, and psychosocial/mental health program for the elderly and the youth.

For Ms. Reyes, “Volunteerism is not just about serving others. It’s about molding yourself and being part of something bigger than yourself.” She also shared that her volunteering engagement in the Child Life Program of the Kythe Foundation and her church ministry further honed her personality and character. In the future, she hopes that each hospital in the country will have a psychosocial program to supplement the healing of cancer-stricken patients, especially children.

Motivated by the mission of enabling all Filipinos to become capable of saving themselves and others, Mr. Gerardo Carual founded the Search and Rescue Unit Foundation, Inc. (SARUF) and has been spearheading the conduct of a national caravan which trains disaster-prone communities on emergency response. Mr. Carual has also been involved in the relief and rescue operations for the victims of major typhoons which hit the country in recent years.

In his response to the recognition, he expressed his gratitude to his fellow volunteers in SARUF who collaborated with him in the conduct of the DRRM trainings.

Dr. Leonida Bayani-Ortiz is known and multi-awarded in the field of women’s welfare and civic work. She uses her background in business to effectively mobilize resources and manage the programs of the various volunteer organizations she has been involved in such as the Young Women Christian Association, Philippine Red Cross, and Girl Scouts of the Philippines. Among the projects which she spearheaded were livelihood trainings for women and research-based awareness project on reproductive/sexual health.

Through social media campaigns, capacity-building programs, advocacy events, education and intervention programs, the Autism Society of the Philippines aims to create institutional mechanisms to support and empower persons with autism and their families. Its members and volunteers work with doctors, therapists, teachers, private companies, government organizations, and lawmakers to foster an enabling environment for people with autism to reach their best potential.

SOV-RC Chair DILG Regional Director Maria Lourdes Agustin thanked the regional nominees for their volunteer work. “We rise by lifting others,” she added, reiterating how helping others through volunteerism can help bring progress to society. For SOV 2019, she hopes for an increase in the number of nominations.

PNVSCA Executive DirectorJoselito C. De Vera shared that the appreciation ceremony for the regional nominees, which started in 2018, will be conducted annually to express gratitude for volunteers who have made an impact on the lives of their beneficiaries.

Director Maria Luisa Salonga-Agamata and Ms. Cynthia Rapacon of the Civil Service Commission, Ms. Editha Paragas of CHED-NCR, Ms. Maria Carmel Rimpos of Department of Education, Ms. Jenny Red of the Philippine Information Agency - NCR, Ms. Carolyn Tongco of Kythe Foundation, Ms. Ma. Liza Guang and Mr. Raymond de Asis of DILG-NCR, and Mr. Rosalito Tandora of SARUF also graced the event.
