“Volunteerism requires passion to help those in need without expecting anything in return.” This was the most common statement of the participants from the Local Government Units (LGU) in the National Capital Region (NCR) to the recent Forum on Volunteerism conducted by the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA).

Around 50 representatives from the City Planning and Development Office, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Social Welfare Department and focal persons in-charge of volunteer programs from local governments of Caloocan, Makati, Malabon, Mandaluyong, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Las Piñas, Parañaque, Pasay, Pasig, Pateros, San Juan, Valenzuela and Quezon City participated last 9 May in the Forum on Volunteerism: A Vision for the Future held at BSA Twin Towers Hotel in Mandaluyong City.

National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Director Reynaldo Cancio presented Ambisyon Natin 2040 and Philippine Development Plan 2017- 2022, with a goal that more Filipinos will be closer to achieving their AmBisyon for a “matatag, maginhawa at panatag na buhay,” while Muntinlupa Junior Rescue Team (MJRT) President Marc Paolo Calalang discussed the collaboration of their organization with the local government of Muntinlupa including their projects and programs, challenges encountered, solutions implemented and the benefits gained. MJRT was recipient of National Outstanding Volunteer Award (Organization Category) in 2014.

PNVSCA also explained the role of volunteerism in development and the shared responsibilities of different sectors such as the government, civil society organizations, academe, corporate sector and international volunteer organizations in volunteering efforts.

During the visioning exercise, the participants were asked to envision the future for the local government and presented their output in a poster. Every group emphasized “passion” and “heart” for volunteering.

Representatives from the Department of the Interior and Local Government- NCR, Local Government Academy and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority also attended the forum.

The forum also served as a platform for the participants to discuss existing volunteer programs and new initiatives that their particular LGU could implement in order to contribute to the achievement of development goals of the government.
PNVSCA Executive Director Joselito C. de Vera urged participants to become champions of volunteerism and share their ideas and vision for the voluntary sector. He emphasized the important role of the local government in harnessing citizen participation and making volunteerism a core program in the LGUs.

The said forum is part of the series of forum being conducted by the PNVSCA in the National Capital Region, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao to advocate volunteerism as a strategy for development, generate ideas among participants and be able to formulate a national policy and action agenda on volunteerism aligned with the PDP 2017- 2022.

The participants also signed the commitment banner expressing their support to volunteering initiatives that can contribute to the achievement of the PDP 2017- 2022.
