02 December 2016 Volunteer community celebrates the National Volunteer Month

The important role and contributions of volunteers and volunteer groups will again be recognized in this year’s celebration of the National Volunteer Month (NVM) in December.

The NVM 2016 theme “Volunteer for Sustainable and Inclusive Development: Isulong, Ibahagi, Iugnay, Isagawa!” sounds the call to support the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and provides a platform for engaging volunteer action to “transform the world” through social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.

The theme also highlights the other facets of volunteering – the importance of going beyond promotion and service provision, but also to share good practices in volunteering so that they can serve as learning tool for replication and modeling by others, and to link volunteer efforts in order to maximize the benefits of volunteer services.

As focal agency for the celebration, the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA), is enjoining the participation of government agencies, local government units, academic institutions, non-government organizations, international organizations, as well as individual volunteers and volunteer groups to conduct volunteering activities to observe NVM. They can also support in the information campaign through various advocacy facilities such as print, broadcast and social media, conduct of forums, organizing volunteer gatherings, and setting up exhibits, fairs, etc.

The NROs and RPDO-ARMM chair the NVM Regional Committees.

One of the highlights of the NVM is the awarding ceremony of the Search for Outstanding Volunteers (SOV). This year, nine (9) national awardees from different parts of the country representing various fields of volunteer engagement will be recognized on 13 December at the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria, Ortigas Center, Quezon City. Secretary of Socioeconomic Planning Ernesto M. Pernia and NVM Honorary Chair Sister Eva Fidela C. Maamo will lead the presentation of awards.

The celebration of NVM every December was declared on 05 December 1998 to to build nationwide public awareness and appreciation of volunteerism, create the environment for voluntary action and recognize volunteers as partners in development.
